Internet in Türkiye: coverage, local SIM and handset registration
A good network, expensive tourist rates and a handset registration rule that catches out anyone staying a while. What you need to know.

Coverage
Broad 4G across the whole country and 5G in the large cities. Istanbul is covered end to end, including the metro and the Bosphorus ferries, and the tourist areas on the coast and in Cappadocia give no trouble either.
The gaps appear in inland Anatolia, in the mountains of the east and in the valleys of Cappadocia once you move away from the villages, which is precisely where the walking routes go.
Handset registration, the country's quirk
Türkiye requires foreign handsets using a Turkish line beyond a set period to be registered. Once that period passes without registration the phone stops working on the country's networks, and registration has a cost and a procedure.
On a one- or two-week trip with a local SIM it does not actually kick in, but it is the reason anyone staying a long spell gets an unpleasant surprise. With roaming or a travel eSIM it does not apply, because you are not using a Turkish line registered in your name.

What the phone is used for here
A lot of translation and a lot of maps. The alphabet is Latin, which helps, but the language resembles nothing familiar, and the distances between Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast keep navigation busy.
Taxis and city transport in Istanbul work out better with an app than with explanations, and markets are far easier to haggle in with the translator open.
Public wi-fi
There is wi-fi in hotels, cafés and many restaurants, with the habit of asking for a code by text to a Turkish number, which is exactly what a visitor does not have. It is a practical reason to bring your own data.
