Internet in Vietnam: one of the best networks in Southeast Asia
Broad, cheap coverage and a trip made from north to south with the phone in your hand. What to expect by area and what to prepare.

Coverage
4G across practically the whole country, rural areas included, and 5G in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other large cities. On the mountain routes in the north, around Sapa and Ha Giang, there are stretches with no signal, and in Ha Long Bay it depends on where the boat is.
A trip from north to south
The typical trip links Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City, with night trains, domestic flights and a fair number of transfers. Through all of it the phone acts as wallet, map and translator at once.
- Train and bus tickets are booked and shown from the phone.
- Ride-hailing apps work well in the cities and save haggling over every trip.
- Paying by phone and by code is very widespread, down to small stalls.
- The translator is in constant use outside the tourist areas.
Local SIM, roaming or eSIM
Local lines are cheap and easy to get, and roaming on a European plan treats Vietnam as an international zone, which is the expensive part. The eSIM takes the first-day advantage: you land with data and without a queue.
